Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about PetFind, QR tags, pet profiles, and what happens when your pet is found.
Getting started
Everything you need to know about getting started with PetFind.
What is PetFind?
PetFind is a digital pet identification system that connects your pet to a unique QR code. When someone finds your pet, they can scan the QR code to access the pet's profile and the contact options you've provided.
How does PetFind work?
You create a profile for your pet and connect it to a unique PetFind QR tag. Attach the tag to your pet's collar or harness. If your pet gets lost and someone finds them, they can scan the QR code using a smartphone and access the information available on the pet's profile.
Do I need an account to create a pet profile?
A PetFind account is used to manage your pet profiles and keep their information up to date. The person who finds your pet does not need a PetFind account to scan the QR tag and view the available finder information.
Can I register more than one pet?
Yes. You can create and manage profiles for multiple pets from your PetFind account.
QR tags & scanning
Learn how PetFind QR tags work when your pet is found.
What happens when someone scans my pet's QR code?
The scanner is directed to your pet's PetFind profile. The page can show the information you've chosen to make available and the contact options that can help the finder reach you.
Does the finder need a special QR scanner?
No. A modern smartphone camera or QR scanner is generally enough to scan the PetFind tag. The finder simply needs to scan the code and open the resulting PetFind page.
Does the QR tag need batteries?
No. The QR code itself does not require a battery or electronic power source. It simply provides a link to your pet's digital profile.
What if the QR tag gets damaged?
If the QR code becomes damaged or unreadable, the tag may no longer scan correctly. Keep the tag clean and attached securely to your pet's collar or harness. If a replacement is available, you can use a new tag with your pet's profile.
Lost & found
What happens when your pet goes missing or is found?
What should I do if my pet gets lost?
Update your pet's status in PetFind to indicate that they are missing. Make sure the information on their profile and your contact details are current so a finder has useful information if they scan the tag.
Will I know if someone scans my pet's QR code?
PetFind can provide scan-related notifications when that feature is enabled for your account. Availability and the information included in a notification depend on the current PetFind implementation.
Can the finder contact me without seeing my personal information?
PetFind can provide contact options without requiring the finder to know more information than necessary. The exact information visible to a finder depends on the contact methods and profile information you choose to provide.
What if my pet is found by someone who doesn't know how QR codes work?
PetFind is designed to keep the process simple. The tag can include a visible QR code and PetFind branding to indicate that it can be scanned. A smartphone camera can then open the pet's profile.
Pet profiles
Manage the information connected to your pet's QR tag.
What information can I add to my pet's profile?
You can provide relevant information about your pet and the ways a finder can contact you. Keep the profile focused on information that can help identify your pet and facilitate a safe reunion.
Can I update my pet's information?
Yes. Your pet's profile is digital, so you can update the information associated with it without needing to replace the physical QR tag.
Can I change my contact information?
Yes. Keeping your contact information current is important because it gives a finder a reliable way to reach you if your pet is found.
What happens when my pet is found?
Once your pet is safely home, you can update their status in PetFind so the profile no longer indicates that they are missing.
Privacy & safety
Understand how your pet's profile and information are handled.
Is my pet's profile public?
The QR code needs to lead a finder to the information required to help identify and return your pet. Avoid adding sensitive information that is not necessary for your pet's identification or for contacting you.
Should I put my home address on my pet's profile?
It is generally better to provide a safe contact method rather than publicly displaying your complete home address. Only include information that you are comfortable making available to someone who finds your pet.
Can someone change my pet's profile by scanning the QR code?
Scanning the QR code provides access to the public-facing pet profile. Profile management should remain restricted to the authenticated pet owner.
What information should I avoid putting on the profile?
Avoid unnecessary sensitive information such as passwords, financial information, private documents, or other details that a finder does not need to help return your pet.
PetFind tags
Questions about ordering and using your physical PetFind tag.
How do I get a PetFind tag?
You can order a PetFind tag through the available PetFind ordering process. After receiving the tag, follow the activation instructions to connect it to your pet's profile.
Can I use the same tag for another pet?
Each PetFind QR tag should be associated with the pet it identifies. If you need a tag for another pet, use a separate tag so each pet has their own unique digital identity.
Where should I attach the tag?
Attach the tag securely to your pet's collar or harness in a location where it is visible and easy for someone to scan.
What if I lose the physical tag?
The digital pet profile is separate from the physical tag. If a replacement process is available, a replacement tag can be associated with your pet's profile.
Ready to protect your pet?
Create a PetFind profile and give your pet a digital identity that can help them find their way home.
